We're kicking off a new interview series with the talented artists who call our hubs home. First up is Stephanie Camille, who shares her creative practice, what inspires her, and what it's like to work from one of Toronto's most unique studio communities.

Stephanie Camille (SC): Hi, my name is Stephanie Camille. I'm a painter and a visual artist here at Witchwood Barns.

ArtHubs Interviewer (AH): What inspires you to make your artwork?

SC: I think I try to gather a lot of inspiration from everywhere. I try to grab inspiration immediately if I am inspired to kind of work through it. So if it's just something that I find cute, something you find pretty, my dog, if I'm in love, like like just random stuff, I try not to think too deeply because sometimes it's hard to work when there's no inspiration, but you have to still work even if there's none.

So I try to find it everywhere. Maybe it kind of helps me internally work through things, but sometimes it's just, it's just pretty and I want to paint it.

AH: How does working in a shared space contribute to your artistic practice, especially within the context of a heritage building?

SC: Well, I really like this space, and I specifically went for a shared studio space because although I did have a studio before that was solo, I found that it's hard for me to create a lot of art without the kind of energy that other artists bring.

It's hard to be creative if I don't see other people's art and other people working. So that's really a plus for me and why I specifically like shared studio spaces. Just hearing people putter around really ignites my artistic practice.

AR: Do you have a favourite piece from your studio that you would like to share with us?

SC: I do so. This one is a recent painting called Dust Collector. I painted it on like this old painting that like I thrifted from, I don't know, it had like a New York theme on it. So I just painted over it because what was I doing with that?

So this one is called Dust Collector. It has some metal embossing work that I've been really inspired by. I've been thinking a lot about disability and kind of feeling sometimes when you deal with chronic illness or chronic pain and being feeling like you're being left behind. So I've been really inspired by tin fish and I was thinking about flowers being left somewhere. This was a different piece for me because I really do like painting more figurative work, so it was tedious to paint a lot of cans. But I think I worked through a lot of internal thinking about it. So that's why I wanted to highlight it today.

Location: Wychwood Barns, 2nd Floor, 601 Christie Street

Area: 17 studios ranging approximately from 50 - 90 square feet in a shared space

Monthly Cost: $350 - $500 range varies by size
