Wychwood Barns Community Association

History:

The Wychwood Barns Community Association (WBCA) was established in 2008 to serve as a conduit between Artscape Wychwood Barns now Arts Hub and the surrounding community.

The WBCA creates community-focused events and programming at the Barns to provide an accessible entry point for community members. Previous events include: Boo! At the Barns; event; The Holiday Market; Garlic Festival; Pop-Up at the Barns; Music at the Barns; the pumpkin parade; Black History Storytelling; and outreach at The Stop CFC Community Market.

In 2013 the WBCA organized a community-wide celebration for the 100th anniversary of the of the St. Clair streetcar line and Wychwood Barns. The celebrations brought together; those who had lived in the neighbourhood for decades; those who moved here as immigrants; those who raised families or ran a business here.

Out of the excitement from the attendees and their eagerness to share their diverse stories, the WBCA established the St. Clair Oral History Project, a dedicated website of stories in audio, video, and text formats managed by a group of enthusiastic and committed volunteers.

In September 2021 the WBCA produced Music at the Barns, a fun-filled family afternoon event of dancing; singing and re-connecting with family, friends and neighbours. It was one of the first neighbour events held towards the end of the pandemic.

Music at the Barns is now an annual event and has grown to include a children’s entertainer; food and beverages; door prizes; a silent auction and community tables. Music at the Barns was held in 2022, 2023 and is in the early planning stages for 2024.

2021 was so successful, WBCA has decided to do it again. And so, Music at the Barns returns for 2022.

A fun-filled family event, Music at the Barns brings together the St. Clair West Community for an afternoon of dancing, singing and re-connecting with family, friends and neighbours.

It will be an afternoon with three musical acts.

AMMOYE sings songs of love, life and justice. A 5-time Juno nominee, Ammoye delivers a wholly unique future forward reggae sound that incorporates old-school rocksteady dancehall and dubstep, with gospel, soul and R&B. With her infectious voice and messages of empowerment, Jamaican-born Ammoye is a lightworker and self declared soul rebel. Her second album Water recently dropped on Lulaworld Records.

BIG SMOKE BRASS is a leading voice in the Canadian brass scene known for their high-energy musical performances. Born on the streets of Toronto in 2017, they are dedicated to fostering community and connecting people. Wherever they play, Big Smoke Brass is determined to share their love of music with the crowd!

Oldies 990!  A huge hit at the last year’s event, the Oldies 990! are a rockin’ and rollin’ all around Toronto band.

Their renditions of the Golden Oldies from the 1950’s and 1960’s guarantees a swingin’ good time for folks of all ages!

Oldies 990! have played bars, music and art festivals as well as weddings all over Southern Ontario.

And for the kids…

Bootsy brings fun and flair when she arrives at any party,  adding some colour and smiles to young faces.  Children and children-at-heart have been lining up to see Bootsy at parties and festivals around the GTA for over 10 years. As an early childhood educator and artist, she shares her artful and engaging energy while leading party games, painting faces/arms or while creating balloon animals.

Bring your own picnic, blanket and lawn chairs.
Event begins at 3pm and all sets run for 1 hour.

Music at the Barns 2021

THANK YOU to the St. Clair West community for making Music At The Barns, a HUGE success!

The WBCA wants to thank performing acts: Pantayo; Samba Squad; Oldies 990! and Daniel Nebiat for a wonderful musical evening. When not dancing up a storm, the children were thrilled with the escapades of Bootsy. And the entire evening was tied together by host Dave Bidini publisher of West End Phoenix Community Newspaper.

Music At The Barns would never have been produced without the generous support of our local sponsors. We owe them a debt of gratitude and thanks.
